The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers a wide range of courses in both pure and applied mathematics and statistics. These meet the needs of students who wish to major in mathematics or statistics as well as those who require some knowledge of mathematics or statistics in other disciplines. In addition, there are courses for those who have a general interest in these subjects.

This Minor/Certificate in Advocacy and Public Engagement Training affirms the role of students and scholars as active citizens, community leaders, and partners in empowerment. It offers training in advocacy and methods of public engagement that can bridge the academic and nonacademic divide. Throughout the program, emphasis is placed upon high-impact experiential education experiences, including ethnographic community-based research and a capstone work placement. Recognizing the value of cross-cultural competencies for solving today’s complex social, economic and environmental problems, it allows students to obtain a choice of theoretical informed perspectives on issues and movements related to mental health/disability, the environment, human rights, reproductive rights, refugees/migration, First Nations, race/racism, gender and sexuality.

The interdisciplinary program in African Studies provides students with the opportunity to pursue their interest in Africa in conjunction with another discipline.

Students will learn about the history of and perspectives on the language and the signing community in Canada with which thousands of Deaf and hearing people are associated.

Anthropology concentrates on change in the contemporary world, especially in relation to new and emerging social challenges.

Biochemistry is the study of the structure, properties and reactions of biological molecules, including their interactions with other molecules within organisms.

Biology, the science of life, is concerned with the structure and function of organisms, their evolution and ecology. The Department of Biology offers undergraduate instruction in all the major fields of biology, with particular strength in cell and molecular biology, physiology, ecology and evolutionary biology.

Glendon's biology program is a great option if you’re interested in exploring the major topics in biology with an emphasis on conservation biology, ecology and animal behaviour. Although the discipline of biology is diverse, conservation biology, ecology and animal behaviour are among the most important features of the environmental aspects of our daily activities. Biophysics is an interdisciplinary frontier of science in which the principles and techniques of physics are applied to study living things and how they work.

Schulich’s undergraduate Bachelor of Business Administration programs - the BBA and iBBA - offer students a challenging and rewarding full-time course of study. The Business and Society (BUSO) program is an interdisciplinary liberal arts degree program which provides students with the tools needed to study the relationship between business, the economy and society.

Business Economics integrates aspects of economics and business studies, focusing on the use of economic analysis and statistical methods to deal effectively with management problems in practical business fields.

Business Economics combines the studies of business administration and economics. Your degree will provide you with the fundamental principles of economic theory, as well as the managerial and accounting skills necessary to succeed in the business world. You’ll consider questions such as why some companies are more successful than others, which industries will be growing fastest over the next years, and whether investors should move their money from debt to equity.

The Honours Minor program described may be combined with any approved non-business Honours program that offers a major/minor option in the Faculties of Environmental and Urban Change, Glendon, Health, Liberal Arts and Professional Studies, Science, or the Lassonde School of Engineering. Students cover the basics building blocks (management, statistics for business, economics, accounting, marketing and finance) and then add three courses to be selected from a list of more than twenty courses in the most diverse fields of business education.

Canadian Studies at Glendon College is the in-depth study of the Canadian experience and the place of the country in the world. It provides students with the opportunity to study national issues in both official languages and from a variety of disciplines, including History, Geography, Law, Political Science and Sociology. With courses in ‘Language, Culture and Literature,’ ‘Structures of Society’ and ‘Economy and the Environment,’ you will develop a multi-dimensional understanding of Canada’s political and legal systems, socio-cultural and linguistic landscapes as well as its geographical, ecological and historical realities, including in its relationship to Indigenous Peoples.

The Certificate in Athletic Therapy includes course encompassing prevention of athletic injuries, injury assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries, and the medical aspects of involvement in sport.

The Black Canadian Studies Certificate introduces the study of Black Canada through four specific humanities and fine arts approaches: cultural studies, history, literature, and music.

Explore and gain applied skills to respond to the climate crisis through climate action and the development of Climate Solutions and Sustainable Energy (CSSE) solutions, including in energy efficiency, renewable and distributed energy resources and community energy and climate change planning. The United Nations has identified Climate Action and Clean and Affordable Energy among its key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). There is a growing market for sustainable energy practitioners in Canada and around the world. 

The certificate prepares students to collaborate with communities to make art of all forms, to express diverse identities, to explore and take action on social and environmental issues. Students develop cultural and artistic skills, deepen their social analysis and learn to facilitate creative processes with groups working for social change.

This certificate program provides a critical social science approach to health provision for those professional programs that deal with the health system, and health needs, of people from a broad range of cultural traditions. 

This Certificate is designed to address a growing need for Spanish-English translators in Canada—particularly in Toronto–with practical university-level training in the field of Translation.

The Certificate in Fitness Assessment and Exercise Counselling is earned concurrently with the honours degree in Kinesiology & Health Science by completeing specified courses along with the required core courses.

Gender and Women's Studies is an interdisciplinary field of study that explores relations of power in the lives of individuals, groups and cultures in multiple settings and sites locally and transnationally.

Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing is offered by the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change, the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies and the Lassonde School of Engineering.

Geomatics encompass the art, science and technology involved in collecting, managing and communicating geographically-referenced information.

The Certificate in Meteorology is a one-year (Fall/Winter) certificate designed to provide specialized education in atmospheric processes to those students who have already completed a university degree in physical science or applied mathematics, thereby preparing them for careers in atmospheric science.

The Certificate in Professional Writing in French, offered by the Department of French Studies, consists in a progressive training in all aspects of writing: grammatical and lexical correctness, stylistic adequacy and variety, genres and practices in public and professional writing, computational writing tools and document design, written communication effectiveness. The certificate aims at training versatile professional writers, who will have an extensive understanding of the way professional written communication works and will create documents addressing reader’s needs and expectations.

The Certificate in Psychological Methods and Data Analysis allows students to obtain recognition for completing, with good standing, a broad range of courses related to research methods, statistics, and related topics. By completing the Certificate, students gain skills in study design, basic and advanced statistical methods, basic and advanced research methods, data analysis, psychometrics, and communicating the results of analyses to a variety of audiences. Quantitative skills are in high demand, and thus completing the Certificate provides graduates with an advantage when competing for positions in the workforce or post-graduate education.

The Department does not offer a degree program but there is a Certificate of Proficiency in Modern Hebrew Language and courses are offered in Hebrew. The degree program in Jewish Studies, housed in the Department of Humanities, requires courses in Hebrew.

The Certificate builds skills and competencies in Spanish for specific professional purposes such as commerce, finance, law or healthcare. It also builds intercultural communication skills required for communicating in multicultural contexts and for global exchanges.

The Children, Childhood and Youth program explores the experiences of children and adult constructions of childhood throughout time and across cultures.

This program examines how cities and regions may be planned in more just and sustainable ways through three thematic strengths: Urban Worlds - engages with different ways of being in cities around the world to consider how urban residents live and interact with each other and produce interconnected urban places. Urban Planning and Politics - deals with the institutions, struggles and processes that help create and govern communities, cities, regions, and urban networks. Urban Political Ecology - focuses on the role of nature and environment in the process of urbanization, urban form and urban life.

Civil Engineering is perhaps the most diverse discipline in terms of its scope and application and has a profound impact on society and quality of life. It also plays a huge role in the development of mineral and energy sources and in protecting our natural and built environment. The undergraduate program in Civil Engineering at Lassonde encompasses designing, building and maintaining infrastructure, foundation design, natural hazards, water and sewage treatment, waste management systems, environmental site assessments and transportation systems.

The Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics offers first-year Classical Greek.

The computer security program, offered by the Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, provides an educational foundation for students to better understand threats to computer systems and the techniques for mitigating those threats.

Creative writing is a delayed-entry Honours BA program. Students planning to apply for admission to the Creative Writing program are strongly advised to six credits in writing related courses among their first 30 University credits.

The cross-disciplinary Certificate in Aging brings together courses across different disciplines (Kinesiology and Health Science, Psychology, Sociology, etc.) with the underlying theme of aging and allows students to develop competence and skills related to such areas as: positive aging and life-long learning about aging; professional conduct with older people; diverse cultural perspectives to understanding aging; advocacy on behalf of older adults; caregiver support and increasing respite capacity; and problem solving and intervention design for age related concerns.

An interdisciplinary certificate based in the Department of Equity Studies, CARRP deals with racial issues in the workplace, schools, health care, immigration, law enforcement, media and the expressive arts. Students, who complete CARRP and who are accepted into the Social Work program will be eligible to count up to 12 certificate credits towards the social work degree, provided these courses are passed at minimum grades of B. This cross-disciplinary certificate may be taken by students who have community college diplomas or university degrees or concurrently by students in any university degree program or independently by students who are professionals in the health field. Glendon’s program in Drama and Creative Arts gives you the opportunity to study the many dimensions of theatre or visual art, with a customized blend of classroom study and studio/performance opportunities. The program has two Honours streams, one in Drama and one in Visual Arts.

Students in the engineering and international development studies program choose one of the engineering programs, plus the international development studies requirements. Graduates are awarded both BEng and BA degrees.

This is a four-year program culminating with an Honours International Bachelor of Arts (iBA) from York University (Glendon) and a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) from emLyon Business School (France). Students take courses in alternance at Glendon and emLyon Business School. The program also includes international internships.

The Department of Earth and Space Science and Engineering offers a Specialized Honours BSc degree in Earth and Atmospheric Science (EATS) with Streams in: Atmospheric Science, Geomatics Science, and Space Science. (Please note: The degree requirements for each Specialized Honours stream vary.)

Certificate in Meteorology - A background in mathematics, physics and chemistry is required to understand the complex and varied processes that occur in the Earth’s atmosphere. This practical program offers an outstanding preparation for students at Lassonde considering a career in weather forecasting or specialist meteorology field or as a foundation for further research and graduate study.

The East Asian Studies program offers a broadly based approach to the study of the peoples and civilizations of East Asia.

The Economics program in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies introduces students to the discipline of economic thinking and equips them for intelligent appraisal of contemporary economic problems in a variety of national and international markets (product, labour, capital, etc.).

Economics is the study of how people and organizations choose to allocate limited resources across competing areas. You will learn about management, international markets, and labour markets, as well as the fundamentals of economic theory. You will examine questions such as why some countries are rich and others poor, and why rent is so much higher in Toronto than in Sudbury, and whether free trade will make us richer.

The completion of a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree provides the qualifications to teach in one teaching panel (Primary-Junior, Junior-Intermediate or Intermediate-Senior) in schools, including certification with the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT). The program is offered in Concurrent Direct-Entry  and Consecutive delivery models.

The Bachelor of Eduation (BEd) Technological Education is also offered to those who would like to become teachers of Technological Education at the Intermediate-Senior (grades 9-12) level.

The Bachelor of Arts (Educational Studies) program aims to provide foundational knowledge and skills so that students will be able to understand and analyze education and its role in contemporary society, and develop students' skills to enable them to undertake educational work in non-teacher-certification contexts.

Offered by the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Electrical Engineering deals with the electrical, electronic and wireless infrastructure that enables our modern life.

The English Department offers a variety of courses in the literature of the English language.

The English Program stands as a hub in the middle of the liberal arts studied at Glendon. The specialized nature of this program lies in the blending of English and Professional Writing into a single degree program that highlights and enhances the relationship between the two fields of study.

The ESL program in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies reflects York University's commitment to students across all faculties, both domestic and international, for whom English is not a first language.

The English as a second language (ENSL) program is for students for whom English is an additional language. ENSL courses help language learners hone their academic literacy skills so they can succeed in their bilingual academic programs. This highly interdisciplinary program merges courses in literature, social science, environmental science, media production, performance and art with hands-on learning opportunities in and outside the classroom. You’ll develop leadership, analytical, collaborative and presentation skills – key to envisioning and realizing a better environmental future.

This program focuses on the biology of environmental issues, integrating ecological theory and practice to predict, quantify and address the impact of stressors such as habitat loss, pollutants, climate change, resource harvesting and invasive species on living systems.

The cross-Faculty BSc degree program in Environmental Science is a joint offering and collaboration between the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change and the Faculty of Science and combines the study of integrating biology, chemistry, physics and physical geography by interacting systems climate change, biodiversity conservation, and physical geography.

Environmental science encompasses the study of the major natural interacting systems of climate, water, biota and landforms and the effects of human activities on these systems.

Housed in the largest fine arts teaching facility in Canada, we are the oldest and most comprehensive university-based film program in the country, with a curriculum rooted in the interrelationship of theory and practice. Streams include: screenwriting and media studies.

The Health and Society (HESO) program provides students with a toolkit for understanding health and illness, both as lived realities and as reflections of larger social, cultural and political processes, on a scale ranging from the interpersonal to the international.

In the Health Informatics program, students take courses in the collection, management and analysis of health information, the design, implementation and maintenance of health information systems, and the evaluation of health information and communication technologies.

In the Health Management program, students take courses in organizational behaviour, health services management, healthcare quality and safety, health system performance, information management systems, and health care leadership.

In the Health Policy program, students take courses that will explore structural aspects of the health care system and assess outcomes in a variety of settings with the goal of developing policies that are both proactive and sustainable.

The degree program in Hellenic Studies offers a coherent program of study in Greek language, literature, history, philosophy, art and culture from antiquity to the contemporary period.

The Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics does not offer a degree program or certificate but does offer language courses in Hindi-Urdu as well as courses on South Asian literature and culture. 

Hispanic Studies offers a whole range of courses in language, literature, culture and linguistics. Language courses are designed to provide you with a basic level of fluency in spoken and written Spanish. The literature courses at the introductory level include surveys of major trends and major works in Spanish and Spanish-American literature. At the advanced level, literature and civilization courses provide concentration in both Spanish-American and Spanish cultures. Courses in Hispanic Linguistics examine the structure of Modern Spanish and its different stages of evolution.

The Department of History offers courses covering thousands of years of history in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas. At the 1000 level, students are introduced to the discipline of history through courses that emphasize theory, method and historiography, and that concentrate on fundamental reading, writing, research and analytic skills. At the 2000 level, students are introduced to major chronological and geographic fields of history. More specialized courses are offered at the 3000 level, while 4000-level seminars and colloquia enable small groups of Honours students to focus on specific historical topics.

The Glendon History program helps students to hone research, writing, and critical thinking skills through topics such as the scientific revolution, global commodities, social movements, political thought, immigration, and public history. Our professors have profiles typical of large research-focused institutions but we offer liberal arts college-sized classes. The Honours Minor BA in Arts, Media, Performance and Design (AMPD) is an interdisciplinary program that offers students the opportunity to complete courses in two or more AMPD departments at the 1000 or 2000 levels of study and courses at the 3000 or 4000 level of study. The program name reflects the pan-School/Faculty nature of the minor.

This degree is intended for undergraduate students who use English as a second language and seek to enhance their English language proficiency in ways that will specifically apply to their chosen field of study and careers as graduates. The designation of a Minor will offer international students an opportunity to enhance their degree program with an academic credential attesting to their communication abilities for academic and professional purposes

Students in human rights and equity studies explore the ethical principles of human rights as well as the roots and impact of human rights violations and efforts at redress. Problems of physical, social and economic security, cultural autonomy, and political rights and freedom of expression are examined.

The Department of Humanities offers Honours BA, Honours iBA and BA degrees in humanities that allow students to take advantage of a wide range of courses addressing important themes in the liberal arts. This broadly-based program of interdisciplinary study emphasizes the different ways in which human cultures and their multiple forms of expression have developed historically and continue to develop today. Humanities courses devote particular attention to the cultural practices of peoples in various times and places and the ways they have expressed cultural values and ideas of a philosophical, religious, moral, political and aesthetic nature. They foster a critical approach to reading and research that, in helping students learn to identify and question preconceived assumptions and values, allows them to engage and appreciate the interrelationship between diverse value systems and thereby to develop an analysis of the human and of human community. Courses stress careful scrutiny of texts and cultural artifacts, critical thinking, reading, writing, seminar discussion and close contact between teacher and student.

For purposes of meeting degree program requirements, all nine-credit foundations courses count as six credits towards the humanities major or minor. Six-credit first year courses do not count toward the major or minor.

The Specialized Honours BA program in Individualized Studies is designed for students who wish to pursue a topic or line of enquiry that requires drawing together courses from several of the University's disciplines or fields of study.

The Integrative Arts Specialized Honours BFA Program is a unique, interdisciplinary collaboration between the Department of Computational Arts and the Department of Visual Art and Art History, focusing on the unexplored spaces between disciplines.

The Interdisciplinary Social Science degree program (ISS), offered by the Department of Social Science, provides students with a solid grounding in interdisciplinary social science research methods and critical social theory.

The iBSc and iBA degree programs are structured to build on the established strengths of the Honours programs by including a mandatory period of study abroad. The program requires students to acquire an international language and to gain international experience on exchange at one of York University’s partner institutions abroad.

The interdisciplinary program in International Development Studies offers a variety of courses in the field of development studies. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers a wide range of courses in both pure and applied mathematics and statistics. These meet the needs of students who wish to major in mathematics or statistics as well as those who require some knowledge of mathematics or statistics in other disciplines. In addition, there are courses for those who have a general interest in these subjects.

This is a bilingual program that provides core and elective courses in key areas of international relations, notably the theoretical strategic, economic and cultural dimensions. The program aims to develop a systematic understanding of the problems and potentialities of international society.

Italian Studies is an interdisciplinary program in the best tradition of the humanities. We offer courses in literature, culture, language, linguistics, media, film and Italian-Canadian studies.

Jamaican Creole is an English-based language with influences from West Africa.  It developed in the 17th century and today it is spoken primarily by speakers living in Jamaica and in places around the world to which Jamaicans have moved. The Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics does not offer a degree program or certificate but does offer language courses in Jamaican Creole. The courses in Jamaican Creole offered at York cover a wide variety of topics.

The Honours Minor in Japanese Studies may be combined with any approved Honours B.A. program that offers a major/minor option. This core curriculum ensures that students will achieve advanced level language proficiency based on knowledge and understanding of Japanese culture in cross- cultural contexts.

In addition to Judaism as a religion, Jewish studies explores the texts, histories, cultures, sociologies, languages and fine arts of the Jewish people from biblical times to the present, locating these within the context of the many western and non-western civilizations in which Jews have lived.

Kinesiology and Health Science is the study of physical activity and its importance for human health, health science and society.

The Kinesiology and Health Science program offers a Certificate in Athletic Therapy and a Certificate in Fitness Assessment and Exercise Counselling.

The Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics does not offer a degree program or certificate of language proficiency but does offer language courses in Korean and courses on Korean culture and society, popular culture, film, linguistics and literature. It offers these courses in various formats including face-to-face, blended and online. One section of the elementary level Korean during the regular academic year and in summer is offered fully online, and some of the culture courses are offered in a blended format.

Upon completion of the certificate, students will:

The 24-credit Professional Certificate in Public Policy Analysis will appeal to individuals who have an interest in public policy analysis and who want their academic record to reflect the completion of a cluster of courses in public policy analysis in a formal way. Upon completion of the certificate, students will be competent to perform analysis of public policies in light of the role of government in civil society through:

• linking theory to practice

The Religious Studies program invites students to join in current scholarly efforts to study, analyze and understand different forms of religious experience from a number of disciplinary perspectives. There are two points of admission to the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree: 1) direct entry and 2) post degree. The Bachelor of Social Work program prepares students for professional social work. Successful practice experience is an essential requirement in the social work degree program. Students integrate theory with practice by completing a 700 hour placement at an agency setting supervised by an experienced and qualified Field Instructor (AP/SOWK 4000 6.00 and AP/SOWK 4001 6.00). The placement is intended to prepare students to function as professional social workers upon graduation. Students will be assigned a Faculty Advisor to support them through their practicum and are required to attend integrative seminars. The practicum courses are graded as "credit/no credit."

This program will provide students with an in-depth knowledge of the field of speech and language sciences and disorders and will also function as a pre professional preparatory program for students who intend to pursue graduate work in speech-language pathology or audiology and/orgraduate community college certificates in communicative disorders.

In the Sustainable Environmental Management program, you will investigate how the environment and natural resources are managed, and how we can transition toward more sustainable systems. You’ll learn key problem-solving, innovation and holistic strategies, combined with an understanding of policy, social dynamics with applied aspects of environmental science and technology.

The Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics does not offer a degree program or certificate but does offer an Introductry Swahili course.

The Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Post-Baccalaureate Diploma is open to teachers who are certified by the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT). Those who successfully complete this program -- which is offered full-time over one year or part-time over three years -- are recommended for the qualification, "Teaching Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing", with a specialization in either ASL/LSQ Communication, or Oral/Aural Communication to the OCT. The program is accredited by the Ontario College of Teachers and by the Canadian Association of Educators of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CAEDHH).

York's Department of Theatre, with 22 full-time faculty members teaching more than 50 half- or full-year courses for majors, is the largest theatre department in Eastern Canada.
